The Southern Regional Load Despatch Center (SRLDC) is one of the five regional load despatch centers of POSOCO - which is a wholly owned subsidiary of Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd. Like the other load despatch centers, SRLDC publishes daily grid reports that can be downloaded in PDF format. SRLDC also publishes reports in weekly, monthly and quarterly cadence. (There may be an annual report as well. We could not find one published yet.) These reports from SRLDC provide a wealth of information and insight into the operation of the southern grid. It is indeed possible to use this data to provide visualizations that are not provided by default in the load despatch center reports.
One very useful chart would be the daily energy usage plot over years. The data series is available for this from around March of 2006 to present day. This basically would show the energy usage trend of almost the whole of the peninsular India. Lets have a look at the graph. Since energy usage is typically an established coincident indicator for the GDP of the region, the importance of this measure cannot be underestimated.
We have plotted each yearly series (calendar year, not financial year) as a separate series so that we could compare the yearly changes easily. The chart clearly shows the usage trends over years since 2006 - and with it, the strides the generation and transmission capacity have made since 2006. Also note that the series is a bit noisy because of the regular drops of energy consumption over the weekends.
One thing we need to keep in mind here is this chart is not exactly indicating the natural energy demand of the grid because the southern grid is energy starved - which means as much energy consistently generated is consumed.
It is really heartening to see the substantial gap up for the 2014 line because of the considerable generation capacities that came online since the fall of 2013. It has been proven in the summer of 2014 that there is enough capacity connected to the grid to generate and deliver more than 800 million units per day consistently.
We will do a detailed analysis of the above chart in a subsequent post.
